Doctors to soon get licenses to practice in multiple states

shutterstock_147989603As per American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), Interstate Medical Licensure Compacts is making efforts to ease doctors to practice in multiple states.

According to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Division of State Government Affairs, if this gets approval, then doctors can get rid of facing the cumbersome process of applying for licenses in each state individually where they may wish to practice.
The American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association and other medical societies including AAP have endorsed the compact. The Federation of State Medical Boards, that represents U.S. medical and osteopathic licensing boards, had released model language in July 2014 for helping states for creation of the compact.
As of January, 18 states (Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, Nevada, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Wyoming) have already passed laws for allowing them to participate in the compact, report says. Additional five states (Arkansas, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota and Washington) have also introduced legislation to do the same.

Post the establishment of this process, physicians would need to designate a member state compact as a “state of principal licensure” followed by selection of other states in which they wish to be licensed. The state of principal licensure will use a doctor’s existing license and records for verifying their eligibility. It would then provide credentialing information to the commission that in-return would allow each state to issue a full license to practice.

The process will prove to be significant for physicians who use telemedicine and hence may want to treat patients outside of their home state.
