| Advantage of ASP based EMR in Disasters like Katrina |
Tarrytown (NY)- Sept 16, 2005---Physicians at New Orleans are facing an additional problem of loss of medical records of their patients in the wake of Katrina disaster. Even with backups at the medical practice, much of the patient records that have been stored on paper or electronically may have been destroyed. However, Omni™ EMR was able to recapture the patient records of its clients that were affected by this disaster.

"The recent disaster in the Gulf Coast region shows, the vital paper-based records kept at other places might not survive. A countless number of hospitals, healthcare centers, and doctors' offices have been destroyed by Katrina's fierce wind and water. The result: Doctors and relief workers in the disaster zone can't provide complete medical care to thousands of survivors suffering from complex health issues." -ABC News- Sept 16, 05

Dr. David John Yeh, a neurologist based in Louisiana, New Orleans is one such physician whose patient records and machinery was heavily hit by Katrina. "Since Omni™ EMR has the facility of storing all patient records on a remote server location, I was able to recover all my records and other important documentation, even after loosing it at my end. This will help me considerably in getting my practice back on the track, once things get normal here." says Dr. Yeh. Omni™ ASP EMR version offers backup of all patient records at their remote server locations. This means that even if all records are destroyed by a calamity or an accident at the practice site, the data can be accessed from the server that is placed at a location outside the practice premises. 128-data bit encryption and Digital certificates ensure the security of such records.

"In the wake of the Katrina disaster, the healthcare IT industry needs to devise means and methods to aid the medical fraternity in better disaster management. For a medical practice, regardless of its size, it is essential that patient records be made available to them in case they loose such information at their end. Providing backup of such important documentation is one very important and primary aspect that needs to be addressed first. In the near future, with CCR initiation, doctors will be able treat displaced patients after looking at their medical records even if the patient is miles away from his township" says Divan Da’ve, CEO of Omni™.
Another advantage of having an ASP EMR is that physicians do not need to spend large sum of money on Servers and other equipment required for hosting the data at their end. It is also easier for the physician to put his practice back in the operational mode. He just needs to have his PC and Internet connection running. Installation, support, maintenance and upgrades also works out be quite economical when compared to the enterprise version, wherein all servers are locally placed at the practice site itself.
